How to learn Words for CAT

Words play a vital role in Competitive Exams. A word may have different meanings. The words for CAT Examination are a bit different. The aspirants must learn words with their different usage. Just take an example:

Directions: In the question given below, the word at the top is used in four different ways. Choose the option in which the usage of the word is Incorrect or Inappropriate

Question – Abstain

  1. Because of poor infrastructure of the village, the people there have decided to abstain from voting.
  2. The father wants to marry off his daughter to a person who abstains from wine.
  3. Being much too idle, he abstains from work.
  4. Abstain from smoking in order to keep your lungs healthy.

Ans – 3 where ‘Abstain’ has been incorrectly used.

Anchor (Noun)

  1. A heavy object which is attached with a rope or chain (झग्गर)
  2. A person or thing that provides stability or confidence in a difficult situation (मुश्किल की स्थिति में स्थायित्व प्रदान करने वाला व्यक्ति या वस्तु)
  3. An anchorman or anchorwoman (संचालक)

Examples on the above meanings:

  1. We used an anchor to pull out the bucket which had sunk in the well. (कुएँ में गिरे हुए बाल्टी को निकलने के लिए हमलोगों ने झग्गर का प्रयोग किया.)
  2. One of my remotest friends proved to be an economic anchor in that crisis. (मेरे दूर के एक दोस्त ने मुश्किल में आर्थिक स्थायित्व प्रदान किया)
  3. There are two highly experienced anchors handling all the political leaders to discuss the sensitive issue. (काफी अनुभवी दो संचालक सारे राजनितिक नेताओं को संभालेंगे ताकि इस संवेदनशील मुद्दे पर चर्चा की जा सके.)

Anchor (Verb) To moor (To make fast) a boat

  1. To moor (=To make fast) a boat etc. (नौका, जहाज इत्यादि को किनारे से बांधना)
  2. To secure firmly in a position (बचने के लिए अपनी स्थिति को बनाये रखना)
  3. To coordinate a programme (मंच सञ्चालन करना)

Examples on the above meanings:

  1. Having had a very good catch, the boatman moored the boat and unloaded the catch. (काफी अच्छी मछलियों के पकड़ने के बाद, नौका खेवैया अपनी नौका को किनारे लगाया और मछलियों को उतारा)
  2. The snake anchored in the burrow so as not to be killed. (सांप अपने बिल में दुबक गया ताकि उसकी जान बच सकें.)
  3. The programme was anchored very excellently. (समारोह को बेहतरीन तरीके से संचालित किया गया.)
