An Allegory is a literary device in which a person, place or event is compared with some other object in broader sense. It aims at conveying a broader message about the real world and its political, moral and social issues. It is a kind of Metaphor. It has two layers of meaning – surface and inner meaning. It employs Symbols but is different from Symbolism as an Allegory is narrative whereas Symbolism is not.
Allegory एक अलंकार है जिसमे किसी व्यक्ति, जगह या घटना की तुलना किसी अन्य चीज से की जाती है जिसका मुख्य उद्देश्य किसी भी भौगोलिक क्षेत्र की राजनैतिक, अध्यात्मिक या सामाजिक मुद्दों के बारे में लोगों को अप्रत्यक्ष रूप से बताना होता है और यही कारण है कि Allegory के दो आशय निकलते है – एक जो दिख रहा है और दूसरा जो छुपा होता है और उसे खुद समझना होता है. हिंदी फिल्म की बात करें तो ‘अपहरण’, ‘राजनीती’ इत्यादि Allegorical Movies है. Allegory वर्णनात्मक व्याख्या होती है जिसमे पात्र और घटनायों की व्याख्या मिलती है.

- Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift is a Political Allegory
- Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan is a Christian Allegory
- Allegory of Cave by Plato gives out some moral lesson.
- Faerie Queen by Edmund Spenser is a religious Allegory in which the Characters stand for different human qualities.
